Hand-painted Silk Challah Cover – Hamotsi Lehem Min Haaretz
I paint this hand painted silk challah cover and write the traditional Hebrew blessing Hamotsi Lehem Min Haaretz across the center.
For the background, I layer shades of blue and violet until the colors blend softly together. I then add small white splashes that bring light and texture to the piece. The Hebrew letters appear in several tones of turquoise and blue, which gives the design movement while keeping a calm and balanced look.
I create each cover individually in my studio in Jerusalem. Because I paint every piece by hand, no two challah covers ever look exactly the same. Slight variations in the colors and brushstrokes naturally happen and give each piece its own character.
A special addition to the Shabbat table
A challah cover often becomes one of the central pieces on the Shabbat table. Silk brings a natural softness and a gentle shine that helps the colors appear vibrant while still feeling refined.
I paint the blessing directly onto the silk using fluid brushstrokes. Instead of making every letter perfectly identical, I allow small variations in the shapes so the text keeps an artistic and organic feeling while remaining easy to read.
