The Significance of Challah Covers
In a Jewish home, Shabbat is celebrated as the holiest day of the week. Families come together around a beautifully set table to enjoy a festive meal. Tradition calls for using a challah cover to conceal the challot during Kiddush, which precedes the meal. In fact, halacha (Jewish law) explains that the blessing on bread takes precedence over the blessing on wine. However, to honor the custom of beginning with Kiddush, the challah is hidden to avoid “jealousy” with the wine.Craftsmanship and Design Process
I design and produce each challah cover in Jerusalem, Israel, combining traditional methods with unique artistry. First, I stretch the silk over a frame, carefully preparing it according to specific orders. Typically, I paint four models per frame. After the designs are complete, I iron the silk, and after two days, immerse it in water to remove excess product and gutta, a technique used in silk painting. When dry, I iron the silk again, then sew it onto a colorful frame and attach a cotton lining to complete the piece. Pricing: Between 170 and 350 shekelsInspirations for My Designs
My designs are inspired by Judaica art, embroidery, and, especially, flowers. Their shapes and colors constantly inspire me, with blue appearing frequently in my work. This color has spiritual significance, symbolizing both the heavens and the sea.
